Caldwell 49 - The Rosette Nebula
Fri Dec 15 2023
The Rosette Nebula is a large, bright flower of glowing gas in the constellation Monoceros, about 5,200 light-years away. It is rich in hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur, and unusually strong in sulfur compared to many nebulae, which makes for vivid color. At its heart, a young cluster of stars is blowing a cavity in the cloud with its radiation and winds.
