NGC7000 - The North America Nebula
Sat Jun 08 2024
The North America Nebula earns its name from its uncanny resemblance to the continent, right down to a dark 'Gulf of Mexico' of dust. It is enormous, covering an area of sky about ten times the size of the full Moon, yet far too faint to see with the naked eye. Curiously, we did not pin down its distance until 2020, when the Gaia spacecraft measured it at about 2,590 light-years away.
